Discovery and Location

Discovered in 2007 in the Artigas department of northern Uruguay by the Uruguayan mining company Le Stage Minerals, the Empress of Uruguay quickly gained international attention for its sheer size and dazzling beauty.

In 2007, the geode was purchased by the owners of the Crystal Caves Museum in Atherton, Australia, for a cool $75,000. It took three months to carefully extract and transport the geode, with the final leg of its journey involving two large cranes to maneuver it into its permanent home at the museum.

Mineralogy and Composition

The geode's exterior consists of basaltic rock, formed through volcanic activity millions of years ago. This volcanic activity created cavities within the rock, which were subsequently filled with silica-rich groundwater over extended periods. As the water evaporated, amethyst crystals, a type of quartz characterized by its deep purple hue, precipitated and gradually filled the cavities, forming the geode's interior.

The geode's interior is predominantly composed of amethyst crystals. The color is attributed to the presence of trace amounts of iron within the crystal lattice. Additionally, minor occurrences of other minerals, such as calcite and hematite, may be present within the geode.
